Vehicle Batteries

A vehicle battery is critical to a vehicle as it stores electricity produced by the alternator to start your vehicle as well as runs the vehicles other electrical systems. It is really important that if your vehicles battery requires replacing that the correct battery is installed. This is because batteries have also developed in recent years with the addition of AGM and GEL battery technologies rather than the conventional lead acid battery. Due to increase in vehicle electrical systems as well as stop start technology fitted to more and more vehicles now, it is becoming more common to find a smaller auxiliary battery. This battery is used by the vehicles electrical systems during the stop start process, so that your lights don't dim and the radio doesn't stop playing that song you've been waiting ages for.

Different types of batteries most commonly found:

  • Lead Acid Battery

  • Gel Cell Battery

  • Absorbent Glass Mat Battery (AGM)

  • Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Battery

  • Nickel Metal Hydride Battery

The lead acid battery is found more commonly in older vehicles where stop start and smart charging systems arent required and/ or fitted.

Gel cell batteries were developed as a non-spillable version of a flooded battery. But due to advancements with AGM batteries there application is limited.

The AGM battery is designed to support higher electrical energy demands in modern vehicles. It can charge up to 5 times faster and withstand 3 times more cycle life than a conventional battery. The AGM battery is ideal for vehicles with automatic start-stop applications and with braking energy recovery.

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) and Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries are most commonly found in electric and hybrid vehicles. Each type of battery as its own advantages and disadvantages.
